A word about the agency and its designer

“The Biroco website strikes me as being one of the most beautifully designed that I have ever come across. It is just so elegant, and admirably suited to its content.”

– Michael Allen, Grumpy Old Bookman

BIROCO WEB DESIGN is a one-man web design agency in London, UK, founded in 2003 by Joel Biroco, a journalist, writer, and designer since 1981.

Biroco was Fleet Street trained, and worked as an editor on many mainstream UK newspapers and magazines, from the Daily Mirror and Financial Times to ELLE, Campaign, and New Scientist, among others. In the 90s, he branched out into book publishing, designed books, and set up his own letterpress limited-edition imprint. He has a 20-year interest in typography and printing (see Loss of roots in design).

In 1998 he began to study design for the internet, and became a 'transitioning designer', taking his skills to the web. He designed and runs the popular personal website Biroco, where he also publishes the widely circulated esoteric magazine KAOS in PDF form and the highly acclaimed Yijing Dao site dedicated to oriental philosophy, which is also his design.

He paints abstracts in watercolour and Indian ink.
