Long continuous rain
July 2, 2004
There is a Chinese character that means ‘long continuous
rain’. It’s constructed from the rain character over the forest
character.
I’ve always loved this picture, because in a forest it is still raining
after it’s stopped raining, the water dripping from the canopy overhead.
You run into the forest to take shelter from the rain, and for a while it
keeps the worst of it off you, but then it permeates through the dense leaves
and starts dripping thick and fast, yet out in the fields it’s sunny
again and the rain has stopped. It’s like it has to rain a bit longer
in the forest to make up for it not raining in the forest at the start of
the storm.
