London I Ching Study Group
If you are in London you may be interested in learning about the I Ching in convivial sitting-on-the-floor gatherings held once a month at my own house in East London. Space is limited, but do if you'd like to come along. I would appreciate it if you could to tell me a little bit about yourself.
There is no set agenda for meetings, they are not formal 'talks' that are passively listened to, rather it is an open and spontaneous discussion on all aspects of the Book of Changes, from the philosophy of change to the nuances of meaning in hexagram lines and practical divination, often flowing into and through quite unexpected areas. All with copious supplies of tea. I am particularly interested, for instance, in the concrete imagery of the oracle, which is often hidden or misunderstood in many translations, and like to introduce that to the group. We emphasise the idea of the 'oral tradition'. By this we don't mean an unbroken lineage of word-of-mouth from antiquity to the present, but rather the idea that something different happens when one comes away from the book as a private experience and starts talking about it with fellow travellers. There is a change in the dynamic, a shift in understanding is felt.
The I Ching constantly talks about 'gathering together' and 'fellowship' and 'friends', yet often it is an interest pursued for years on one's own. The aims of the group are to encourage and support a deep study of the Changes, to go beyond the 'plateau' that many level out at and push on further, and to meet others of like mind. Those who attend are free to bring along any of their own readings they have found perplexing to serve as examples for discussion. It is a place where you can ask questions about aspects of I Ching study that you have not found an answer to in books. The group welcomes beginners and experienced alike and primarily exists for the joy of seeing what comes of it.
